Everyone loves puppies! But did you know there are critically important developmental phases and classical conditioning periods your puppy will go through before even joining your family?
Puppy raising is an art and a science. Do something at the right time and the puppy will benefit for its entire life, do the same thing at an inappropriate time, and the puppy might be negatively affected its entire life. We want to raise puppies who will grow into confident, stable, and emotionally resilient adult dogs, able to handle the stresses and challenges of a modern 21st century lifestyle. This takes expertise, time and financial investment.
In our desire to raise the most behaviourally sound, confident and emotionally stable puppies possible, we implement the game changing Puppy Culture Program. Puppy Culture is a series of educational videos authored by Jane Killion, outlining the science pertaining to puppy development in the first 12 weeks of life, and its practical application in the form of enrichment protocols and emotional resiliency exercises for puppies. It is the best hands-on guide for puppy rearing available and it has grown to be a movement among breeders whom aim to raise confident, enrichment seeking puppies that will achieve their full potential as adult dogs.
While we, along with countless other responsible breeders, have always sought to give our puppies the best start we could, the extremely well researched Puppy Culture protocols have allowed us to improve our methods considerably. Puppy Culture is taking the dog world by storm and has been implemented and embraced by the world’s best breeders, trainers, and countless puppy families. We are proud to work alongside these amazing breeders who are all committed to raising behaviourally sound, confident, emotionally stable dogs.
Here is a short overview of the developmental phases each puppy goes through, and the Puppy Culture protocol applied during that period. This is only an overview, once a puppy is reserved by contract, a Puppy Culture DVD or log in for video on demand, is provided so the new owner can watch Puppy Culture for themselves, follow along with our protocols and progress, and continue when our puppy joins their household.
Puppy Culture – The Prenatal Period: Before Birth
As breeders, we have done everything possible to give our puppies the best genetic material by selecting parent dogs with the best physical and behavioural attributes ascertained through health and temperament testing, however, once a breeding has taken place, the puppy will be dealt a genetic hand. While there is nothing we can do to control this genetic lottery, we can make a difference in how those genes express themselves.
The power of touch:
Did you know that mother dogs who receive affection during their pregnancy by way of gentle tactile stimulation may give birth to more docile puppies? There is a significant correlation between regular, gentle tactile stimulation of pregnant mothers and their foetuses and the positive temperament traits of the puppies.
Puppy Culture – The Neonatal Period: 0 – 14 Days
New-born puppies look like they simply and eat and sleep their way through life. But there is furious activity going on under their little hoods – They double their body weight during the first 10 days and their brains undergo amazing changes. We use Dr Carmen Battaglia ‘Early Neurological Stimulation’ to take advantage of this period by neurologically “jump starting” puppies between 3 – 16 days old.
Puppy Culture – Transitional Period: 14 – 21 Days
Did you know that puppies have developmental periods, and those developmental periods are defined by behavioural markers?
It’s important for both breeders and puppy owners to be able to correctly identify these behavioural markers, because something that is extremely beneficial one week, could be very harmful in the next week, depending on what developmental period the puppy is in.
In this amazing week, we see the puppies transform from deaf, blind, helpless loaves of fur, to real little puppies who can hear, toddle, and play. You’ll get to peek at the funny and touching moments when they realize there’s a whole world outside of themselves and we introduce our puppies to toys, people and the world beyond their whelping box.
Puppy Culture – Critical Socialisation Period: 3 – 12 Weeks
Did you know that the critical socialisation period in dogs begins at just 3 weeks old, and is already closing by the time they reach 12 weeks old?
Did you know that prevention of common behaviour problems can begin when the puppies are just 3 weeks old?
What does it take to socialise a puppy? Socialisation is more than just exposure – it is a rich blend of skills, experiences, enrichment and conditioning.
In this action-packed 9 weeks, we train our puppies a wealth of essential life skills and enrich their environment. We introduce early problem solving and teach the art of good communication. We exercise their resilience and increase their stress tolerance to help nurture emotional stability.
All this together combines to lay the foundation on which our puppies can grow to be adult dogs capable of reaching their full potential.
